Wingsuit Base Flying Up Close

Is this flying or just falling less fast? Perhaps it’s both. The wingsuit does behave like a wing when the airflow inflates it into an airfoil shape. And experienced wingsuit flyers can glide at a ratio of 3:1 (3 metres forward for every 1 metre down). Compare this to light aircraft about 10:1, airliners about 12: 1 and sailplanes about 40:1. In any case, wingsuit base flying like this has to be the closest it gets to speeding through the sky like Superman or Peter Pan!

Straight Into A Crack | Wingsuit Flight in the South African Wilderness

By JoHannes | Wingsuit, February 22, 2025

Back to our South African trip:

My buddy ‪@herzl.mathias‬ and I started around 4:30 AM to reach the exit point, called “International,” in the Du Toitskloof area early enough to catch the right conditions. But that day, we were wrong… there were no good conditions at all. The crack was in the wind shadow and relatively okay for jumping, but we hadn’t expected winds of over 30 km/h on the ground. Watch what happens!
